The music of traditional Irish fiddle player Tommie Potts (1912-1988) has been a great inspiration for many years. Having grown up playing traditional music, only to leave it aside to focus on jazz and improvised music for more than 10 years, I felt compelled to return to his music, which I had always loved, but never fully explored, at the beginning of the pandemic in early 2020.
The music documented in this live recording takes Potts' already radical interpretations of traditional tunes as its point of departure, and was spontaneously interpreted and improvised with in the moment.
It is the first recorded documentation of the beginnings of a return to tradition, to my past and future. There is so much in the music of Potts, and in the traditions I love, to explore, and this is only the very beginning.
